The Gilmores are super happy about Lorelai and Christopher getting married, though Emily is a little upset that they eloped and Lorelai left her a message on her answering machine. She’s even kept the tape from the machine, and she plays the message at Friday night dinner. Richard and Emily want to throw a wedding party.

Logan helps Rory move into Paris and Doyle’s place, and then he has to go back to New York. Rory brings some stuff over to Lucy and Olivia’s to get ready for Lucy’s birthday party. Marty is there and he acts really strange. Rory is getting irritated, but Lorelai tells her to be the bigger person and be nice to him.

Lorelai is getting ready for the Stars Hollow Knitathon. She says she has to go into town to get needles and doesn’t want Christopher to go with her. She tells him she wants to give the town some time to get used to her not being with Luke, but he convinces her it will be okay. Babette is cold and distant, Miss Patty tells him he must be bored living in Stars Hollow, and Luke gets annoyed when he sees them together. Lorelai tells Sookie that everyone is being “cordial” and it’s weird. They decide that to get the town on board with Christopher, he should go to the bar with Jackson, and people will start liking him if they see Jackson likes him.

Anna comes to Luke’s and tells him her mother is doing badly, so Anna and April are going to move to New Mexico to be near her. Luke is very understanding, but April is a mess. She doesn’t want to go. Luke gives Anna some suggestions about how to make the move easier for April, like maybe they can wait until school is over or April can stay at Luke’s when Anna leaves, but Anna gets pissed and says she doesn’t want Luke talking to April about the move anymore. She is such a bitch.

Lorelai doesn’t like the shirt Christopher wants to wear on his man date with Jackson. Christopher doesn’t get what the big deal is, but Lorelai tells him that people aren’t really okay with him yet. The man date is weird and awkward, but Jackson warms up when Christopher conveys – using farming metaphors – how much he cares about Lorelai. Things are looking up, but then at the Knitathon, he goes ahead and pledges all the money needed to fix the bridge, not really understanding that everyone was looking forward to a day of Stars Hollow knitting fun. They all pack up, disappointed, and go home.

TJ comes to the diner and tells Luke that Liz is having the baby at home and she wants Luke to be there. Liz and TJ name the baby Dulla (Doola? Not sure of the spelling there). After Luke holds the baby, he goes to Anna’s and tells her he’s not going to let her take April away from him.

At Lucy’s party, Rory confronts Marty and asks him to apologize for being a jerk. He stops acting like a robot. They both get tipsy and flirt a little. Marty tells Rory she’s beautiful, and she tells him to go dance with Lucy. He gets up and gives Lucy a huge make-out kiss.

Emily and Richard are on their honeymoon, so the Girls spend Friday night together at Yale. Rory waves to Marty, but he avoids her. Rory leaves a newspaper meeting one day to talk to him. I guess she just doesn’t notice how standoffish he’s being because she insists he come hang out with her on Saturday.

Lulu is a teacher at the elementary school, and her class is putting on a production of Fiddler on the Roof. Lorelai signed herself and Luke up to help with sets and costumes weeks ago, and Lulu comes to the diner to remind Luke to be there the next day. When he gets to the school, Crazy Carrie is there. Her daughter is in the play and Carrie is directing. Luke asks Lulu where all the other adults are. It’s obvious he wants to see Lorelai.

Lorelai is driving through town one day and she sees Luke’s boat parked on the street. She goes home to her empty garage and decides to turn it into a special Lorelai place. Sookie comes over to help her out. Michel feels left out, so they invite him over and he ends up doing all the work.

Doyle comes over to Rory’s dorm and starts yelling at Rory for being so disrespectful and running out of the newspaper meeting without his permission. He says this while he’s taking his shoes off and drinking water from Rory’s fridge. She kicks him out, and Paris gets mad at Rory because now she has to spend the night at Doyle’s with his three roommates.

Luke is at the school for the final dress rehearsal and one of the girls trips over her costume. Luke goes to Lorelai’s and yells at her because she should have been there to fix the costume right away. He sort of mocks her special garage, and she says she’s upset that he came and got his boat without telling her. They yell for a while and then Luke leaves. At the production later, Luke and Lorelai make eyes at each other.

Logan comes over and interrupts Rory’s and Marty’s Marx Brothers marathon. He says a bunch of people are going out and he wants Rory and Marty to come along. Marty feels really left out all night, and then he freaks out when Colin says everyone owes seventy-five dollars. Logan offers to pay his share, but Marty doesn’t want him to. He says he needs to find an ATM. Rory follows him outside and he says he only has eighteen dollars in his account so he doesn’t know what to do. Rory gives him the money so he can go back inside and give it to the guys. When they get back to Rory’s dorm, Marty tells Rory he likes her. She says she likes Logan. Aw, poor Marty. Later, Logan knocks on Rory’s window and she lets him into her room. They start making out, and I can only assume they have sex.

Luke: I’ve got a hammer.

Crazy Carrie: Oh, I know you do.

Terrance, Paris’ life coach, tries to get Paris to get over Asher and meet some guys. She decides to try speed dating. Doyle is there, too, and he and Paris start talking and Paris won’t move on when the bell dings.

Headmaster Charleston calls Rory and asks her to help him out. A Chilton student named Anna wants to go to Yale, and Charleston wants Rory to show her around. Rory wants to show Anna all kinds of things that are really boring, but Lorelai says maybe she should show her something fun. Rory insists on showing her nothing fun at all, and they run into Logan at the library. He also thinks Anna should do something fun while she’s at Yale.

The next day, Logan and Colin barge into one of Rory’s classes and start acting like they’re fighting over her. Then Finn comes in wearing a cop’s uniform and asks Rory to give the boys their balls back. Rory is mortified. Anna thinks it’s awesome. Back in the suite, Rory tries to tell Anna that college isn’t just about freedom and fun, but then Doyle comes out of Paris’ bedroom wearing nothing but a robe.

Rory sends Anna to the “fro-yo” social while she yells at Logan, but Anna never shows up at the social. Rory calls Marty to help her look. While they’re looking for Anna, Rory starts yapping about how upset she is that Logan is “coming after her” and won’t leave her alone. Marty tells her it’s obvious that Logan likes her and to stop being so naïve because it’s annoying. Major points for Marty. Then Headmaster Charleston calls and says Anna’s parents were called when the cops broke up a party.

Miss Patty invites Lorelai to a party to celebrate all her years in show business. Lorelai says she’ll come and bring Luke, but Miss Patty says the party is going to be on Luke’s dark day, the day he disappears every year. Lorelai doesn’t know anything about it, and when she asks him about the party, he says he can’t go because he’s going out of town on business.

Luke has been storing his father’s boat in some little old lady’s garage, but now the lady is moving into a nursing home and she needs him to move the boat. Lorelai is driving home and sees him yelling at the lady. He says he wants her to just scrap the thing. Lorelai takes him back to the diner and he tells her the next day is the anniversary of his dad’s death. Lorelai tries to get him to reconsider getting rid of the boat, but he says it would be better if it was gone. So Lorelai takes it and puts it in her own garage. Luke is pissed when he finds out and he yells at Lorelai for butting in. He comes by Patty’s party later and apologizes for flying off the handle.

Richard comes to Yale and tells Logan he heard about how he professed his love for Rory in the middle of class. He says he and Logan’s father have been talking and they’re finalizing the plans for his engagement to Rory. Logan looks stunned when Richard welcomes him to the family. Richard meets Rory around the corner and they walk away laughing.

It's really awkward to watch Emily on a date.

Rory is tired of humoring her grandparents, so she gets Lorelai to agree to “divide and conquer.” Rory will have dinner with Richard on Friday while Lorelai spends the evening with Emily. Rory tries to talk to Richard and get him to realize the pool house is fun for now, but not a permanent home. Lorelai takes the straightforward approach and asks Emily if she and Richard will get back together. Emily says it’s clear to her the Richard has moved on, so she wants to start dating. Rory is horrified when she finds out. Some guy named Simon asks Emily out. She panics and calls Lorelai to demand she come over and help her get dressed. She has a lovely time on her date, but starts crying when she gets home.

Lorelai realizes Christopher never called her after the time she went over to help him with GG so she calls him to find out what’s going on. He’s weird at first, but then Lorelai invites him to come over to the Dragonfly for lunch on Saturday. She invites Rory, too, and Rory is not very happy to see him when she gets there. Lorelai steps away for a minute and Rory acts like a total bitch, accusing him of trying to ruin Lorelai’s relationship with Luke. Christopher is pissed and says Lorelai called him, not the other way around. Chris leaves and Lorelai asks Rory to explain why she and Chris seem so angry at each other. She’s a little annoyed that Rory went to Christopher and asked him to leave Lorelai alone, but Rory gets to her when she asks what Luke said when she told him she was having lunch with Chris. Because of course she didn’t tell him.

Lorelai talks to Sookie and claims she didn’t mean anything by not telling Luke about lunch, and she vows to tell him as soon as possible. He seems okay, but like two nights later, he makes a point of telling her he’s fine with it, which tells her he’s really not. Christopher leaves Lorelai a message later and she chooses not to return his call.

Lorelai: Who is this?

Emily: This is you in twenty years.

Also in this episode:

Marty and Rory hang out and Rory says she and her boyfriend broke up. Marty tries to ask her about the boyfriend situation, but Rory falls asleep.

TJ has messed up the bathroom at his and Liz’s new place and now the water isn’t working.

Jackson is avoiding townspeople because they keep swarming him with selectman favors. He’s decided he’s not doing any town meetings, but Miss Patty tricks him into coming into the dance studio on meeting night.

The Girls go to Friday night dinner, where they have drinks in the pool house with Richard and then go to the main house for the rest of the night. Emily hates the arrangement because the girls talk about everything with Richard and then they’re out of things to talk about with her.

Luke and Lorelai are being really cute and flirting with each other at the diner. They make plans for their first official date and really, they’re just so cute and it makes me happy. Luke takes Lorelai to a restaurant where they’re greeted by Mrs. Landingham from West Wing. Luke goes there all the time and knows the owners really well. They helped him out a lot when he opened the diner. Lorelai asks Luke if he remembers the first time they met because she doesn’t. He says it was at the diner eight years ago. She wrote a horoscope for him that said, “You will meet an annoying woman today. Give her coffee and she’ll go away.” After telling the story, he opens his wallet and takes out the horoscope. He’s kept it this whole time. The date ends in Luke’s bed.

Early the next morning, Lorelai gets up and goes down to the diner in one of Luke’s flannel shirts to get coffee. She doesn’t know the diner’s open. She expects to hear some gossip about her and Luke that day and thinks it’s a little weird when Patty and Babette don’t say anything to her about it. That night, Luke and Lorelai go to a town meeting together. Taylor brings up their relationship as a serious town matter. Everyone is worried about what’s going to happen when Luke and Lorelai break up. Taylor is convinced the town will be split between the Lukes and the Lorelais. Luke yells at everyone and tells them it’s none of their business.

Rory goes back to Yale and moves into her new dorm. She’s worried about Paris because she thought she’d be there already. She calls her and Paris says Asher died in Oxford. When Paris gets to Yale, she says she wants to have a wake in the suite.

Rory and Marty walk around campus together and run into some spoiled rich kids who act snotty to them. One of them recognizes Marty because he bartended for one of his parties. Later, Rory is hanging up flyers for the wake when the spoiled rich kids come in looking for some girl. The blond guy, Logan, makes fun of her flyer and then defends himself when Rory says he shouldn’t have been so snotty to Marty.

Emily and Richard make an appointment to talk to each other about functions and bills. One night, Emily sees Richard drive off and she calls Lorelai. She’s freaking out and wants to know where he’s going so late at night. She doesn’t want him to be the only one going out, so she gets in her car and drives away, calling Lorelai again from the road. Lorelai says she can’t talk, so Emily goes to Rory’s dorm. She gets there while the wake is going on and she unloads all her stuff about Richard on Paris. Marty asks Rory if she has a boyfriend. She says she doesn’t know and then drives to Dean’s house to find out.

Lorelai goes to visit Rory at the dorm and as soon as she walks into the suite she knows Emily has been there. She makes fun of Rory for a minute for subscribing to the Stars Hollow Gazette, and then for planning to go ridiculously early to her first class. Rory says she’s not going to be that early, but she and some guy (Marty, though we haven’t met him yet) are the first ones there. When Rory gets back to the dorm, she finds a bunch of new furniture in the common room. Emily calls looking for a thank you. Rory’s a little upset because she doesn’t want her suitemates to resent her. She wants to tell Emily she’s gone too far, but Lorelai says things will be easier if she just keeps the furniture.

Sookie wants to start a catering company with Lorelai until the Dragonfly can open, and she’s already agreed to do some kid’s birthday party. Sookie is apparently mentally challenged and/or has never met a child before, and she prepares ridiculous food and doesn’t understand why the table is set with a tablecloth with Lord of the Rings characters on it. Lorelai freaks out when she realizes Sookie didn’t make any food that the kids are going eat and the cake is some kind of tropical monstrosity. She takes over and Sookie gets pissed. Sookie realizes she’s not really cut out for children and starts freaking out about her pregnancy. Lorelai calms her down.

There’s a big party coming up in Rory’s dorm, and people who want to participate are supposed to leave their suites’ doors open. Paris really wants to open their door, but Rory is reluctant. Paris calls Lorelai and tells her Rory’s having trouble adjusting to college. Rory takes the phone away from her and explains what’s going on, and Lorelai convinces her to participate.

Rory tells Tana she can borrow something to wear for the party, and Tana chooses Rory’s Chilton uniform. Madeline and Louise show up and say hello. A set of twins whose mother is a friend of Emily’s come by and annoy Rory. Paris is determined to start over at Yale because nobody knows her there, but she doesn’t have any fun at the party and it’s not long before she kicks everyone out. Later that night, Rory goes into the hallway and finds Marty passed out naked on the floor. She gives him her robe and sends him to his room.

Jason “Digger” Stiles, the son of Richard’s former employer, wants to go into business with Richard. Richard is wary, but Jason says he’s absolutely serious and he wants to piss off his father. At the next Friday night dinner, Rory meets Lorelai outside and says she’s going to yell at Emily about the dorm furniture, but she chickens out. Richard comes out and announces that he’s going into business with Digger. Emily thinks it’s great until she finds out one of the reasons for Jason’s proposition is revenge on his father.

Rory: Tana still doesn’t know she’s at Yale.

Rory: I’m rooming with a Stephen King novel.
