Save the Gilmore Girls?

I was contacted yesterday by someone who wanted me to sign her petition to bring back the Gilmore Girls for either an eighth season or a movie.

I can understand the sentiment. The last episode really kind of sucked and it was a huge letdown. However, it’s been – what? – three years? I’ve long since moved on and gotten over it. Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel are off doing other things (I’m really enjoying Parenthood, by the way), so I’m pretty sure they’ve moved on, too. The bottom line is that I don’t care enough about it. I figure Rory goes on to become a successful journalist and Luke and Lorelai end up together and that’s all I need to know. If they made a movie, what would it even be about? Shows like Dead Like Me and Firefly, shows that got canceled before any sort of conclusion could be reached, benefited from movies made after the series ended. But Gilmore Girls was on for seven years. And honestly, that was one year too long for my liking. The last season was awful.

So I won’t be signing any petition for two reasons: 1.) I think it would be overkill. The series ended three years ago and how many people would even care if a movie or eighth season was announced? 2.) I really doubt that any number of signatures would convince the powers that be to do it.

On the other hand, I don’t begrudge anyone the right to sign petitions, so if you’re interested you can find it here.

Agreed. I feel the same way about ppl who want a Freaks and Geeks reunion. I’d have wanted to see more seasons back THEN, but I don’t think a reunion could work now. It’s over…

Yeah, like if someone told me today that a Gilmore Girls movie was in the works, I think my first reaction would be, “Why?”

That’s how I feel about Friends. There’s always talk of a movie and I hate the idea. It wouldn’t be the same. They did ten seasons, Ross and Rachel get together, what more can you want? And Parenthood has been pretty great so far. Lauren Graham’s done an excellent job.

Friends? Really? After ten years people still aren’t satisfied? Now THAT would be overkill.

I think Parenthood is great too! It’s a little more “feel good” than I’d really like (It’s the end of the episode, so let’s get the whole family together for swimming/Max’s softball game/a big family dinner!), but I’m okay with it. I love the characters so far, especially Craig T. Nelson’s. He consistently cracks me up.

I absolutely agree. The last season sucked, but at least the ending was open enough that you could see whatever future you wanted for the girls. A movie would just be… meh. And an eighth season? Way too late for that. I’d like to remember the end of Gilmore Girls as (if not good) somewhat satisfying.

That’s exactly how I feel. I kind of can’t believe anyone’s even talking about an eighth season.

I agree about Parenthood being too feel good. I think once it gets into its stride, they’ll probably be more cliffhangers. At least, I hope so. And I keep expecting Erika Christensen’s husband to be interested in that other woman and there to be a whole big thing, but nothing.

Oh, I’m pretty sure that’s coming. They don’t just have that skank hanging around for nothing.

There’s always fanfiction for those craving more. True, you have to search through mounds of crap to find anything good. But when you do, man is it good!
