Emily invites Lorelai to a charity auction, and she decides to go to see if she can find something for the inn. Michel begs to go with her because he apparently loves auctions. While Michel bids on some stuff, Lorelai goes to the bar for a glass of wine. She meets a nice man and they hit it off, but she doesn’t get his name. She swallows her pride and asks Emily to get her his name and number, and Emily is very smug and happy to oblige. His name is Payton. He asks Lorelai to a David Bowie concert in a week, but wants to see her sooner. They go out to dinner and Lorelai has a terrible time. Payton is boring.

Some guy has moved into a house in Lorelai’s neighborhood and he comes over to introduce himself. Lorelai makes the mistake of offering to help him settle in if he needs it, and the guy says he’s going out of town and needs someone to water his lawn. The sprinklers need to be turned on twice a day for fifteen minutes or else the grass will die. When Lorelai goes to turn on the sprinklers the next day, there’s a note on the door asking her to go inside and water the plants. The inside of this guy’s place is ridiculous.

Payton’s mother is friends with Emily, so of course Emily finds out about the date. Lorelai tells her she’s not going to go out with him again and Emily gets upset. She knows about the concert and she can’t believe Lorelai would cancel when she already made plans with him. Then Richard calls and says he played golf with Payton’s father to discuss how to handle the situation. He tells Lorelai she needs to apologize and go to the concert. Lorelai tells Emily she’s sorry and says if she really wants her to, she’ll go to the concert. Emily thanks her and says yes, she really would like her to go to the concert with Payton. You walked right into that, Lorelai.

Rory goes to the neighbor’s house to water the lawn, but the sprinkler gets messed up and she can’t get it to turn off. She tries to get a hold of Dean, but she can’t reach him. She runs off to find him and runs into Jess instead. He goes back with her and fixes the sprinkler. Then Dean pages Rory and says he’s on his way over. Jess turns the sprinkler back on and leaves so Dean won’t know he was there.

Richard, to Emily: It is one of the great pleasures of my life to be able to surround you with a house full of useless objects.

  1. Lorelai says:

The sprinkler thing is Jess’s best moment. Actually, that’s a pretty big call, but it’s gotta be top three at least.

I agree. He was so nice and then so good about leaving when he knew Dean was coming along.

Oh Rory, just tell Dean to get over it or dump him, seriously. If you have to resort to subterfuge it’s not worth it.

Have I mentioned how much I love Michel? Probably. But I really do!

Every time I watch this episode and see ‘Payton,’ I squeal and say “OMG! It’s Don Draper!” Gilmore Girls and Mad Men…it’s like my two favorite shows colliding.

Eh, who cares about the Dean/Jess thing? I’d be perfectly happy if Dean just went away.

I have to say, I kind of love the whole tiki bar thing. Maybe not for my own house though…
