Gilmore Girls Season Two, Episode Twenty-One: Lorelai’s Graduation Day
Lorelai and Luke haven’t spoken to each other since the big screaming match after the car accident. That being the case, the girls can’t go to the diner for breakfast. Lorelai gets Sookie to make breakfast for them. Oh, Sookie. Lorelai runs into Luke at the market and tries to talk to him, but he’s really abrupt with her.
Lorelai is finally graduating from college. I thought she was just taking a business class, but I guess she’s getting a degree or something. She doesn’t want to invite Emily and Richard to the graduation, but Rory invites them anyway. Everyone is super excited for her. Sookie makes her a tassel hat cake and Christopher sends her a gift basket.
The night before the ceremony, Jess calls Rory to say hello. The next morning, Rory stops outside Chilton and turns around. She gets on a bus and goes to New York to see Jess. She goes to find him at Washington Square Park because he mentioned the place over the phone. He doesn’t seem at all surprised to see her there in her Chilton uniform.
Lorelai gets to the college early to make sure she gets a good gown. Emily is there. She has apparently hired a cameraman to record the ceremony. Emily makes quite a scene and the other graduates are not amused. When Lorelai walks and receives her diploma, Emily cries a little and Richard looks proud. Afterward, she asks them to take a picture with her, the requisite “parents flanking the graduate” shot.
Jess shows Rory around New York. He takes her on the subway and to a hot dog stand and to a rare record store where she buys a graduation present for Lorelai. When Jess asks her why she came, she says it’s because he didn’t say goodbye. She gets on the bus to go home, but it gets delayed and she ends up missing Lorelai’s graduation.
When Lorelai gets home, Rory is waiting for her on the front porch. She explains everything and verbally flagellates herself for being such a horrible daughter. Lorelai says she must be falling for Jess.

I love the moments when Lorelai graduated. And I hate that Rory missed it. I’m all for ditching school but not your mother’s graduation day.

Yeah, this was a very shitty Rory episode. She really screwed up.

Best Michel quote ever.

does anyone have any info about Laurelai’s dress that she wore on her grad day? I think it’s beautiful and am wondering who made it.
