Gilmore Girls Season Two, Episode Seventeen: Dead Uncles and Vegetables
Emily comes to the inn to drive Lorelai crazy while she tastes soups to decide what to serve at her DAR meeting the next day. When Lorelai leaves the room to take a phone call, Emily starts talking to Sookie about her wedding plans. Sookie lets Emily set her up with a company that will let her sample place settings. Lorelai and Jackson are concerned. Jackson and Sookie had originally agreed on a small and simple wedding, and now Sookie is talking about dancing midgets and giant mushrooms. Lorelai talks to her and Sookie finally realizes how crazy she’s being.
Luke calls the inn and requests some rooms. His uncle Louie died and Luke is anticipating family members coming into town for the funeral. Unfortunately, everyone he talks to has an excuse and can’t make it. Lorelai and Rory go to the diner one day and find the place in chaos. Luke is on the phone and can’t serve and he’s frustrated that he has to go pick out a coffin. Lorelai offers to run the diner while Luke is at the funeral home, and Rory goes upstairs to yell at Jess. She’s doing that “act like I hate him” thing with Jess and it’s really annoying, but she does manage to get him to go help Luke in the diner.
Emily comes to the diner and yells at Lorelai for making Sookie fire her. Lorelai accuses Emily of planning her, Lorelai’s, wedding, not Sookie’s. Emily says she would have planned Lorelai’s wedding with a Russian theme. She asks Luke what he thinks of the Romanovs. When he says they probably had it coming, Emily says he and Lorelai belong together.
Luke’s uncle Louie was one of the Stars Hollow war re-enacters and those guys usually do a whole traditional thing at funerals, but the re-enacters say they hated Louie and aren’t going to the service. They tell Luke he’s just like Louie, a loner who hates everyone. Lorelai tells him he’s not like that at all and there’s no way he’s going to end up a bitter old recluse like Louie. Lorelai goes to the funeral with Luke. When the service is over, the re-enacter guys show up and do their thing. Lorelai talked them into it. When they get back to the diner, they’re surprised to see a bunch of people there to have a wake. Rory thinks Jess set it up, but he tells her all he did was unlock the door for Miss Patty.
Michel: Nine rooms for Luke from Luke’s Diner…French fry convention?
Other notes: The town’s second troubadour sets up a farmer’s market in the square and drives Taylor crazy because his vegetables are better than the ones in the market.
