Gilmore Girls Season Two, Episode Ten: The Bracebridge Dinner

The Independence Inn is hosting a really big event for some people calling themselves the Bracebridge group. They’ve rented out the entire inn so they can have a special dinner. The staff will wear nineteenth century clothing and Jackson will play the Squire of Bracebridge. It’s quite the to-do and everyone is excited. Unfortunately, the Bracebridge group gets stuck in Chicago because of the snow, so Lorelai and Sookie decide to go ahead with the dinner and invite all their friends. Rory wants to invite Emily and Richard since things are still pretty bad between them because of Richard’s troubles at work.

Dean sees Jess fighting with some guy at school. He tries to break it up, but Jess takes a swing at him. He’s not happy to see Jess has come with Luke to the dinner and tells Rory he doesn’t like the guy. Paris comes by the inn to drop off newspaper stuff and Rory invites her to stay for dinner. Paris is happy to stay and point out historical anachronisms to Lorelai.

Lorelai has arranged for a bunch of horse drawn sleighs to take everyone for a ride through town. Dean rides with his sister, so Jess jumps in with Rory when he sees her by herself. Jess says he doesn’t think Dean seems like Rory’s kind of guy. They ride by the town square, where the Gilmore girls have built a snow-woman for some snowman contest. Rory says they’re not hopeful because there’s a really good entry that’s sure to win.

Richard is in a really good mood and Emily has no idea why. Then, at dinner, he tells Taylor he’s retired. It’s the first Emily’s heard of it and she’s pissed he would do such a thing without talking to her.

That night, as the girls are getting ready to go to sleep, Rory asks Lorelai if she’s heard from Christopher. Lorelai says she did get a call from him. He wanted to know if Rory could spend her winter break with him and Sherry. Rory’s kind of mad that Lorelai didn’t tell her he called and of course Lorelai acts like a junior high kid who doesn’t want to share her BFF.

Emily barges into the room and says she can’t spend another minute with Richard. She and Lorelai creepily go about their identical nighttime facial regimens. Emily gets into bed, but a second later she gets up and says she needs to take a walk. She goes down to the lobby and sees Richard there. He apologizes for not talking to her and says he really thinks he’ll be happier now. Emily goes back to their room with him.

The next morning, Dean sees Rory and Jess exchange a look. He has a touch of the jealous. On their way home, Lorelai and Rory pass the town square and see the awesome sure-to-win snowman has had his head knocked off.

Sookie: That makes me so mad. And so sad. I’m smad.

I’ve always kind of hated this episode. What was with Richard comparing a horse drawn sleigh to a roller coaster? I found that whole scene ridiculous; good thing you skipped it?

Not to mention the issues with Paris and her anachronisms. And just, well, everything else.

Yeah, I skipped that bit with Richard and Emily in the sleigh because it was kind of a throwaway scene. It was just thrown in to show what a good mood Richard was in, and I thought it was kind of boring.

I do like the rest of the episode, though. Just because it’s a little different, I think.
