Gilmore Girls Season Two, Episode Eight: The Ins & Outs of Inns
Emily wants Rory to sit for an oil painting for Richard’s study. She tries to have her pose next to a swan and with one arm over her head, but Lorelai convinces her that maybe just having her sit there reading a book would be better. Emily relents and the painting is beautiful.
Lorelai has been thinking about the old Dragonfly Inn that Rachel took her to, and she finds out it is owned by Fran, the lady who runs the bakery. She and Sookie go over there to talk to her, but Fran says she can’t sell the property. Lorelai tries to tactfully ask what will happen to it after Fran dies, but Fran doesn’t understand the question.
Jess somehow gets his hands on some police tape and draws a chalk outline in front of Doose’s Market. Taylor freaks out and gets the whole town together for a secret town meeting to talk about Jess. Luke goes crazy when he finds out. Rory yells at Jess for making Luke’s life so difficult. I think we can assume he took Rory’s words to heart, because later on, we see he has fixed a toaster that Luke was having trouble fixing.
Mia, owner of the Independence Inn, comes to Stars Hollow for a surprise visit. Mia seems to be a pretty big deal. Even Luke is happy to see her until she tells Lorelai that Luke spent most of his teenage years wearing a Star Trek shirt. Lorelai is dreading telling Mia about her and Sookie wanting to leave the Independence Inn, but Mia is surprisingly okay with it. In fact, she asks them to hurry along with their plans because the only thing that’s been keeping her from selling it is the fact that she wants to ensure Lorelai has a job.
Of course, Lorelai freaks out. When Lorelai ran away from home, Mia took her in. She put her to work as a maid and let her live in the potting shed. Lorelai can’t believe Mia would be so cold as to sell the place. Ugh, get over yourself, Lorelai. She picks a fight with Sookie and starts acting like they should put their plans on hold. Later, she realizes she’s just panicking and apologizes. I think this is the episode during which my husband said he thinks Lorelai has an apology fetish and the reason she’s always getting into fights with people is so she can apologize later.
Emily finds out Mia is in town and she goes to the inn to meet the woman who helped raise her daughter. It’s awkward and Emily says Mia should have sent Lorelai home instead of taking her in. Before she leaves, she asks if Mia has pictures from those days. Mia promises to send her a box full.

Heh. Luke spent his teen years wearing a Star Trek shirt. Which means Luke didn’t lose his virginity until well after his teen years….
That does kind of make me love Luke all the more.

Ha! That’s probably true. And you’re right. It does somehow endear him to me even more. Oh, Luke.
