Gilmore Girls Season One, Episode Twenty-One: Love, Daisies and Troubadours
Lorelai wakes up at six-thirty one morning because Luke is outside with a hammer, fixing a broken porch rail. He’s been at the Gilmore house every day fixing things. Lorelai tells him he needs to focus on Rachel. Luke says he’s used to living alone and having Rachel around all the time is weird.
Rory’s going through the closet one morning and she finds the Dean box Lorelai was supposed to throw away. She takes it to her room to look at all her Dean stuff. It makes her smile, and that afternoon she decides to go into the market for the first time since the breakup. Dean’s not there and Rory is discouraged. She goes to his house and freaks out his little sister by acting like a crazy stalker.
The Gilmore girls bring Max to a town meeting. The town troubadour is upset that another troubadour is trying to move in on his territory. Taylor thinks they’re both just vagrants, but Rory makes a speech about expressing yourself and fixing things and, I don’t know, it’s clear she’s talking about Dean and the fact that she couldn’t tell him she loved him.
Tristin asks Rory to go with him to a PJ Harvey concert. She turns him down, but he tells Paris, Louise and Madeline that she’s going. Paris is furious. Rory is really annoyed because things were just starting to be okay between them again. After school, Tristin grabs Rory’s books and says he won’t give them back until she agrees to go to the concert. Dean shows up just at that moment and is really upset that Rory’s hanging out with Tristin. Rory tells him he’s wrong and says she loves him. They start making out.
Rachel is leaving town. She says it’s because of Lorelai. Luke goes over to Lorelai’s house to get his toolbox and tell her Rachel is gone. When he gets there, Max is just arriving for a date. There’s a lot of tension between the men, and after Luke leaves, Max asks Lorelai if she’s over Luke. He doesn’t believe she never dated him. They have an argument and Lorelai doesn’t know how to fix things between them. Max says they should get married. Lorelai tells him that’s not the way to propose. There should be magic and a horse and a thousand yellow daisies. She gets to the inn the next morning and finds a thousand yellow daisies waiting for her.
Oh, in case you’re interested, Taylor rules that the first troubadour should be the only troubadour, but both troubadours do a song together.
Luke: Some guys are just naturally loners.
Lorelai: Yeah, lonely guys.

Love that the second troubador is Mr. Rosso. Go, Mr. Rosso, go!

That scene at the start with Luke fixing the porch at six AM is one of my absolute favourites. And Max sucks. (And looks like Walt Disney.) But mostly, he sucks.

I really liked the actor who plays Max when he was the wolf in The Tenth Kingdom. Usually that means I’m predisposed to like any other character he plays for the rest of his life. But yeah, Max just kind of sucks.
