Dean comes over and finds the Gilmore girls watching The Donna Reed Show. They’re making fun of the whole fifties woman-in-the-kitchen thing, and Dean says he thinks that way of life seems kind of nice. The girls are not happy with him. A few days later, Dean makes a joke about oppressed housewives and he and Rory have a fight.

Babette and Morey are going out of town and they ask Rory to housesit for them. She invites Dean over to keep her company. When he shows up, Rory is wearing a fifties style dress and has cooked dinner. She says it’s Donna Reed night, and she’s done some research and found out that Donna Reed was actually very involved in her show and was an uncredited producer and director.

Lorelai convinces Luke he needs to paint the diner. The night Rory goes to Babette’s to housesit, Lorelai goes to the diner to help him pick colors. There’s a weird vibe between them and they almost kiss, but Lorelai says she has to go. When she gets home, the bird Rory brought home as homework isn’t in her cage. The first thing Lorelai does is call Luke and beg him to come over and help her find it. Luke thinks it’s a booty call and is shocked when he finds out there actually is a bird loose in the house.

Luke and Dean meet outside when they take out the trash. Lorelai comes out looking for Luke and Rory comes out looking for Dean. Everything is really awkward. The next day, Lorelai is talking to Sookie and wondering why Luke made the, “So you really do have a bird in the house,” comment. Sookie explains to Lorelai that he probably thought she was making an excuse to see him. Lorelai does that stubborn thing she does where she won’t admit Luke has a thing for her. She gets pissed and walks off. That night at Friday night dinner, Emily gets Lorelai to admit she might have feelings for Luke.

As the girls are walking around Stars Hollow the next day, a guy pulls up on a motorcycle. He takes his helmet off and we are finally introduced to Rory’s father, Christopher.

Lorelai, to her parents: The both of you are going directly to hell, I hope you know that.

Emily, after Lorelai admits she might have feelings for Luke: Thank you, I’m glad you were honest with me. Now we can discuss what on earth you could possibly be thinking.

Note: This episode marks the first appearance of the town troubadour.

Christopher! I remember hating him with the power of a thousand burning suns when I was a teenie, probably because he got written into the show every time Luke and Lorelai were finally going to actually admit their feelings for each other, honestly.

I actually didn’t mind him too much until much later in the series, but yeah, he was an awfully convenient plot device to keep Luke and Lorelai apart for as long as possible.

I’m glad I’m not the only who hates Christopher that much. Its a great ep until he shows up. I love how excited Luke was when he showed up at the house.

Sigh. Too much Rory and Dean. I’m sorry, but Jess was totally her soulmate.

I agree. I really like Dean, but I like Jess so much better, even if he was a terrible boyfriend.
