Gilmore Girls Season One, Episode Thirteen: Concert Interruptus

capture_20112009_182604Lorelai has offered to organize a charity rummage sale, so the whole town is dropping off crap at the Gilmore house. There’s a horribly ugly sweatshirt with rhinestones all over it that Lorelai thinks is the best thing ever, so she takes it from the charity pile. When Luke sees her wearing the horrible rhinestone monstrosity, he freaks out and yells at her for wearing something that isn’t hers. Miss Patty sees it and thinks it must have belonged to Luke’s old girlfriend, Rachel. I imagine we’re supposed to read something into the fact that Luke’s ex-girlfriend is enough like Lorelai to have the same wacky taste in clothes.

Rory has to invite Paris, Madeline and Louise over to work on a debate for school. She actually kind of bonds with Madeline and Louise when they start asking her about Dean, but Paris just wants to work on the debate. Sookie has gotten four tickets to see the Bangles, but Lane’s mom won’t let her go. Lorelai suggests Rory bring the Chilton girls, and she and Sookie can get nosebleed seats at the door.

Madeline and Louise spend the whole concert flirting with the guys behind them, and before long, they’ve been invited to a party. They leave with the guys, but Madeline tells Rory where the party is in the hopes that she and Paris will join them later. After the show, Lorelai barges into the apartment building and knocks on every door until she finds the party. After she yells at the girls and tells them she’s going to talk to their parents, Paris tells Rory this is the best night she’s ever had. Since they’re being friendly, Rory asks Paris why she has such a crush on Tristin, and Paris says she’s known him since second grade and Rory doesn’t know him like she does.

Lorelai gives Luke Rachel’s sweatshirt back. He apologizes for being a weirdo and admits he might not be totally ready to move on from Rachel yet.

Rory: I told you to turn right at the big rooster statue.

Paris: I thought you were kidding.

Gasp! Loise without her Betty Paige bangs!

That’s Madeline actually, but one’s never in a scene without the other so I guess it doesn’t matter which one is which! I think she looks much better with the bangs.

Did you know the actress who played Madeline was actually about 25 at the time? And Liza Weil, who plays Paris, was about 23 I think. It makes me crack up in this episode when Paris says, “Everyone at this table is sixteen.” Not one of them was sixteen, though at least Rory and Louise weren’t too far off.

Wasn’t the actress who played Lane like 30 when she played the part?

Oh, yeah! IMDB says she was born in 1973, putting her at about 27 when the show started. Wow.

Haha. That’s only, like six years younger than Lauren Graham, the girl that played Lorelai!

I love that night was the best night Paris ever had. I never understood how Lorelai lived there so long and never heard of Rachel

Yeah, the half-assed explanation was that she was busy with an eleven-year-old daughter and just moving into her house at the time Luke was dating Rachel.

Even though this is TV, I never got why Lorelai and Sookie would wait to buy tickets at the door. That always seemed like a risk. I also have to say I really see Rory inviting the three of them (I know at Lorelai’s suggestion) as trying to buy friends. Seemed a little weird to me.

It does seem a little like buying their friendship.

One of the guys who’s having the party is famous now, no? I think he might’ve played Superman. I can’t remember.

Really? I didn’t recognize either of them.

I just looked it up. You were right. It was this guy: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0746125/
