Gilmore Girls Season One, Episode Nine: Rory’s Dance
Chilton is having a dance. Rory doesn’t want to go, but Lorelai convinces her it might not be so bad. Rory asks Dean and he says yes, so Lorelai makes Rory a dress and invites Emily over so she can take pictures.
Dean comes to pick Rory up and honks his horn outside. Emily will not let Rory go out and insists she wait for him to come to the door. He finally gets the picture and comes to the door. Emily is not impressed with him. After Rory and Dean leave for the dance, Emily insists on staying because Lorelai has thrown her back out and can’t move.
Rory has a lovely time at the dance. Louise tries to flirt with Dean, but he makes it clear he’s only interested in Rory. Paris is unpleasant as usual, and her date comes up to Rory and asks for her number. Rory reminds him he came with Paris, but he says Paris is his cousin. Paris freaks out and yells at Rory, asking if she told anyone she had to bribe her cousin to take her to the dance. She yells loud enough that everyone hears her. Tristin starts a fight with Dean because he’s an ass. Dean pushes him around a bit and tells him to stay away from Rory.
Rory and Dean leave for Stars Hollow, and they end up at Miss Patty’s, where they fall asleep reading a book. The next morning, Emily wakes Lorelai up and they both freak out because Rory isn’t home. Miss Patty calls and tells Lorelai Rory and Dean are safe, so now Emily is upset that Rory was out all night with a guy. She’s convinced Rory is going to get pregnant and ruin her life. Lorelai tells her to get out of her house. Rory overhears this, and after Emily leaves, she starts to thank Lorelai for standing up for her. Lorelai, however, is still freaking out and she yells at Rory for staying out all night. Rory gets all indignant and says Lorelai knows she didn’t do anything wrong. Uh, Rory, you stayed out all night with a boy. Even if you didn’t have sex, that’s kind of not allowed. Anyway, she goes in her room and slams her door.

Oh I remember this. I remember Lorelai being all, “You got hit with the pretty stick” or something and simultaneously thinking it was so awww and that it was kind of glurgey.
It seemed like one of the few times Lorelai got all normal mother-y. Yelling at Rory like a real mother, ya know?
Liked the Emily/Lorelai dynamic when Emily stays to take care of Lorelai. Aw.

I love this one. Emily taking care of Lorelai, Lorelai convincing Rory to go to the dance, and Lorelai switching from yelling at her mother to yelling at her daughter. That was dead on. The pretty, pretty dress.

I love this episode, too. It’s one of my favourites. The confrontations at the end were amazingly well-acted. I also loved Deana and Rory at the dance. The mashed banana on toast is classic.

Mashed banana toast is yummy! :p
I don’t remember this one as well, but it actually has heaps of good bits, so I’ll have to re-watch!
