Gilmore Girls Season One, Episode Eight: Love & War & Snow
A big Stars Hollow Civil War reenactment is coming up. Luke thinks it’s totally stupid because it was basically twelve guys who stood in the snow waiting for the enemy, but the enemy never showed up.
There’s a big snowstorm and Emily has her driver pick Rory up from school so she can spend the night in Hartford. Lorelai has a thing for snow. She’s sure she can smell it in the air and she always knows when the year’s first snow is about to fall. The storm prevents Lorelai from going to Friday night dinner, so I guess it is magical. The storm also prevents the Gilmores’ cook from making it in to work, and Emily freaks out and thinks they’ll all starve. Rory shocks her grandparents when she makes a frozen pizza. During dinner, Rory gets the grandparents acting silly and lighthearted when she brings down a photo album from Lorelai’s room. But then they come to a picture of Lorelai in a debutante gown. Richard and Emily get moody because Lorelai never got to have her coming out party because she got pregnant.
Lane has a crush on a boy named Rich Bloomenfeld and she’s been trying to talk to Rory about it, but Rory’s been preoccupied with Dean and school and hasn’t been paying as much attention as Lane would like. At a school band thing the night of the snow storm, Lane can’t stop herself from running her hand through Rich’s hair. She freaks out and runs to Rory’s house. Nobody’s there, so she lets herself in and pages Rory, and then yells at her for never being around.
Max Medina is driving through Stars Hollow on his way home when his car dies. Lorelai runs into him during her first-snow-of-the-year walk through town, and they finally have their date. Luke, who has grudgingly had a softening of the heart and is giving coffee to the war reenacters, sees them together and gets sad. Lorelai invites Max inside, marking the first time she has ever let a man spend the night at her house. Their making out is interrupted by Lane, who has been waiting in Rory’s room for Rory to come home. Max offers to make some coffee while Lorelai stands in for Rory and talks to Lane. She lets Lane spend the night, so Max ends up staying on the couch instead of in Lorelai’s bed.
When Rory comes home in the morning, she kind of freaks out a little when she finds her teacher sleeping on the couch. Then Lane wakes up and she and Rory make up.
Michel, about the weather: It is cold and gray like a fat dead pigeon.

Is Luke the smartest guy on this show, or what?

Except for his swansong plot. “Should I tell my fiance that I just found out that my ex-girlfriend from way-back-when had a baby? No! Instead, I’ll just sulk about it and act weird.” Because, seriously, it was not THAT big of a thing, but he had to go make it all ridiculous. The conversation could have been:
“Hey, Lorelai, my ex-girlfriend from about 12 years ago apparently got pregnant and the kid was mine! Now I have a preteen daughter I never knew about.”
“Cool, Luke. Let’s take her to the movies sometime!”
BAM. I just saved us about 2 years of vomit-worthy plots

Ugh, so true! April is the worst thing that could have happened to this show. Aside from Christopher, that is.
