Gilmore Girls Season One, Episode Five: Cinnamon’s Wake
On the bus to school one morning, Rory is surprised when Dean jumps on the bus to talk to her. She’s completely awkward and kind of rude, but he still goes away with a smile on his face so I guess we can count the meeting a success. After school, Rory goes to Dosse’s Market to spy on Dean and she somehow ends up buying a head of lettuce and running out of the store when Dean tries to talk to her.
There’s a bake sale at Chilton and Lorelai gets Sookie to make some things because I guess she just can’t be bothered. Max Medina shows up and asks Lorelai out. She’s really not comfortable with the idea, but she likes him a lot so she agrees to have coffee with him. At the coffee shop, Max tries to convince Lorelai they should date. She’s reluctant at first, but Max wears her down.
Babette’s cat, Cinnamon, dies and the whole town turns out for the wake. Sookie and Luke get there at the same time. Sookie tries to set up her hors d’oeuvres and create a classy atmosphere, but Luke wins the crowd over with his burgers and fries. Lorelai has forgotten that she’s supposed to go out with Max that night, and Rory sees him when he shows up next door. Lorelai tells Max she has to cancel because of the cat. Max thinks it’s an excuse, but Lorelai convinces him she really does like him and wants to reschedule. Rory yells at Lorelai for not telling her about Max, but she gives them her blessing in the end.
Rory goes to sit outside and Dean comes by to tell her he’s sorry he keeps bugging her. It’s clear she’s not interested so he’ll leave her alone. Rory, awkward as ever, tells him she is interested and then runs away.
Emily’s pissed when Lorelai tells her she went to a cat’s wake instead of her cousin’s funeral. Lorelai doesn’t feel too bad because she doesn’t remember ever meeting the cousin in question.
Emily: Your father doesn’t know any Nazis.
Luke: You don’t do yoga on the Dalai Lama’s mat and you don’t come behind my counter. Period.
Note: Babette is really short, so her whole house is Babette-sized. The doors are low, the counters are low, the chairs are low. Lorelai sits on a stool while she helps Babette do dishes.

I love the wake and learning how the cat died. The part about the cousin cracks my mother up every time she and I had the exact same conversation when my cousin was getting married.

It cracks me up, too. I believe I’ve had the same argument with my own mother.

I’m so not classy because I’d prefer burgers and fries at a wake, too.
