Gilmore Girls Season One, Episode Two: The Lorelais’ First Day at Chilton
Lorelai’s alarm doesn’t go off, so Rory’s first day at Chilton is a disaster from the start. Lorelai has no clean clothes, so she ends up leaving the house wearing a hot pink tie-dyed shirt, cutoff jean shorts and what looks to me like cowboy boots. Because I guess all her shoes were dirty, too? Rory insists on Lorelai coming inside with her, and of course Lorelai meets some other kid’s dad on the way in and gets totally sidetracked ‘cause he’s so dreamy.
When they get to the headmaster’s office, they’re surprised to see Emily there. She and Headmaster Charleston insist that Lorelai take off her trenchcoat, and instead of just politely refusing and sitting down, Lorelai actually takes off her coat. Her outfit elicits disgusted stare from Emily. Headmaster Charleston is perfectly nice until Emily and Lorelai leave, and then he tells Rory his friendship with her grandparents will not help her at all at Chilton.
A psychopath named Paris hates Rory on sight. Paris harasses Rory and tells her to stay away from the Franklin, the school’s newspaper, which Rory hasn’t even heard of yet. A guy named Tristin keeps calling Rory “Mary.” He says he’ll loan Rory his notes for a class and gets really creepy when he offers to help her study. Later in the day, Rory bumps into Paris and ruins some big project. Rory is dismayed to find that both Paris and Tristin are in her next class. When Paris gets in trouble for not having her project ready, Rory tries to help by telling the teacher she wrecked it. Paris is mad and tells Rory to leave her alone. Rory gets pissed about Paris’ attitude, so she starts answering the teacher’s questions before Paris can open her mouth. Now Paris is even more angry because she’s usually the only one who can answer all the questions.
The dad from Chilton shows up at the inn to ask Lorelai out to dinner. She turns him down because he’s a Chilton dad and she doesn’t want to make things awkward for Rory. Then Lorelai gets a call from her next door neighbor, Babette, who says a couple of guys are hanging around her house. Lorelai gets there and a guy named Mick says Emily Gilmore ordered a DSL. Lorelai tells them to get lost and then goes to the hairdresser to yell at Emily.
Emily: I hate that she takes the bus. Drug dealers take the bus.
Notes: Mick, the guy trying to install the DSL at the Gilmore house, is played by Sean Gunn, who plays Kirk for the rest of the series.

I felt sorry for Rory she couldn’t catch a break but I loved when she finally beat Paris at answering the questions.
Drug dealers take buses?

Yeah, that was a really good Rory moment. I love how angry Paris got.

Ah, Tristan DuGrey. He’s like the GG version of Bruce Patman
Perhaps it’s just in my nature to question everything Emily-type people say, but I do believe that drug dealers do not take the bus. They drive around in flashy cars, flaunting their drug dealer-ness. Drug users take the bus.*
*No disrespect to anyone who takes the bus. I also take the bus, and I am neither drug dealer or user, so there you go.

You’re so right! He is a Bruce Patman.
I don’t know, I can see drug dealers taking the bus. You should know, though, that the only buses I’ve ever been on have been big yellow school buses. Oh, and the shuttles at Disney World.

Drug dealers take the bus. I adore Kelly Bishop.

Oh, I also always notice the Kirk reference. Nice. Back in the early days, I actually didn’t mind Rory. Hmm.
